5th grade project - The Situation Room

Throughout the year, students have been monitoring major events and issues around the world. Over the summer, they applied this knowledge and decided how to best combat ISIS. They did this by role-playing key decision makers in the situation room, where top US officials make critical decisions about world security.

Students first needed to analyze all possible solutions before them in small groups. These solutions included military, economic, political, and diplomatic options.

Students then gathered as a whole class. Their task was to come to a full consensus on preferred solutions. This meant making full use of their persuasive abilities to convince others of their ideas. It also meant critically analyzing others’ ideas to determine if there were better alternatives available to their own ideas.
