PechaKucha Day i

Hello visitors!

Over the past three weeks, my students have been working on their first individual presentation of 2016. Each student chose a topic they were passionate about and shared it with their peers. These presentations tied in with theme for Unit 1 in literature, Who We Really Are. The format of the presentation took form of a PechaKucha.

PechaKucha 20x20 is a simple presentation format where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images... Give a microphone and some images to an architect -- or most creative people for that matter -- and they'll go on forever! Give PowerPoint to anyone else and they have the same problem.

PechaKucha is a particularly restrictive form of presenting. There are strict limits on the timing of a presentation and the composition of slides. This narrow scope forces presenters to fundamentally rethink a presentation and often pushes them out of their comfort zone. There are infinitely fewer choices which adds newfound weight to each decision. Further, the deliberate absence of text can be jarring, as can the uninterrupted transition from slide to slide. The end result, however, is elegant and wholly engaging.

A voice. A visual. A story.

At the end of the PechaKucha Day students were formally assessed and given feedback by their teacher and peers. They also voted for their peers in four different categories:

  1. Most Beautiful PK
  2. Most Interesting PK
  3. Most Engaging Presenter
  4. Best Overall PK

The votes have been tallied and the award ceremonies will be held in class this week. The winners will be announced in class and revealed publicly in this post at the end of each day. Check back on Saturday afternoon for the full list of award winners!
