Speech Contest

Background

Our students have been doing weekly speeches to develop their public speaking skills in order to enhance their speaking ability, as well as build up their confidence. Our goals are to make sure that our students are comfortable expressing themselves, while showing their emotions and being who they are.

We have worked on the following basic speaking skills:

1. Volume

2. Voice (Tone/Pitch/Energy)

3. Eye contact

4. Gestures

Purpose

We decided to have an in-class speech contest in order to evaluate their abilities and prepare them for the PEAI Speech Contest in November. Students presented in front of another 2nd grade class in order to pull them out of their comfort zone and experience presenting under pressure. Along with the teachers, the students in the other class voted for the best speaker to determine the winners.

Below is a compilation video of all the winning speeches.

Reflection

Our students worked really hard to prepare and give their best speeches. We were pleased with the results and are optimistic about how much more they will improve as the end of the year approaches. Students realized the importance of preparation after speaking in front of people they were unfamiliar with. They were really nervous, but the experience they gained will help them be more confident the next time around. We plan on having an additional contest in October to give them another chance to improve even further.

Congratulations to all the winners and to all the students for all of their hard work.
