Welcome to Camp Green Lake

The Assignment

In class we finished reading the novel Holes.  This book was probably the most enjoyable and popular novel the students have read all year.  Instead of doing a review test, I thought a project would be more appropriate.

In the novel Holes, Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake, a camp for juvenile delinquents. Camp However Camp Green Lake was not like he had imagined.  Instead of it being a wonderful camp in the forest on a beautiful blue lake, it was dry, barren desert.

Students took on the roles of Camp Organizers.  They needed to make brochures and have an information session where they would try to persuade parents to send their children to Camp Green Lake

The Process

Students were required to to brainstorm and plan first.  Once they had a rough idea, they would create a rough draft to see how the information would fit on a 6 page brochure.  Once it visually looked correct, the students would  create the real thing.

The Brochure

The biggest challenge for the students was to limit the amount of text in the brochure.  They knew it had to be visually appealing but they didn't realize that large blocks of text would make it visually unappealing to readers.  Most of the students were able to find the proper balance between text and images as they did their rough drafts.

These are some of the more visually appealing Brochures that were made.

The Presentations

The presentations were all done very well.  The students were able to use the brochures and elaborate on their ideas.  Purpose of the presentation was to take on the role of someone from Camp Green Lake trying to persuade parents to send their troublesome children to Camp Green Lake.
